Morality

Morality

Morality is a watercolor and acrylic painting depicting a crystal cave and waterfall. The piece features crystals, which are inorganic or nonliving objects that grow from any number of substances and crystallize. They are used by a number of faiths and cultures for healing the body, mind and spirit. Because crystals are nonliving, I have used them to represent learned behavior. Since they are associated with healing and purity, I decided that I would depict morality. Morality is the trait of knowing the difference between good and bad, but there are many discrepancies on what constitutes morality from culture to culture and religion to religion. My decision in using the crystal cave as a setting for Morality is twofold. Firstly, I wanted the scene to be ethereal and beautiful by anyone's standards, since morality is a necessary and important trait to have. Secondly, I wanted to illustrate morality in a way that deviates from the traditional Christian viewpoint that is "only Christians can be truly moral". This is a harmful and inaccurate stance to take, as it delegitimizes and creates fear surrounding those of different or no religious affiliations.
