Growth

Growth

Senior Portfolio

My time in Senior Studio at Clemson University was incredibly busy, and sadly cut short, but the experience was valuable and lasting. I graduated with a BFA in May 2020 with an emphasis in drawing and a minor in Digital Production Arts. I work primarily in watercolor, layering acrylics and pastel on top to give my works a greater amount of depth. I use this medium to depict landscapes both familiar and fantastical. These landscapes are symbolic of the human mindscape, the psyche. I use different types of growth found in nature一crystals, mushrooms, plants, and fire一as a metaphor for human development.

In order to fully understand this series, you must first understand my formula. Growth can be living or nonliving, which I used as a parallel for innate (or born with it) versus learned behaviors in humans. From there, I determined whether each type of growth was seen as universally more positive or negative, and I chose human behaviors in the same way. Using this formula, I was to illustrate an array of human experiences using landscape.
